Industrial Process Safety Indicators. Module 1 - Utility of Performance Indicators

In the case of major incidents, there are generally several components of the safety management system that are not working properly.

Site-specific indicators, aimed at tracking the state of the safety management system over time, help to keep the system of measures to control risks in order.

The use of a limited number of specific indicators therefore helps to prevent major incidents from occurring.

Learning from (near) incidents in your own organisation or in others helps to take a critical look at your measures, in particular your work processes. It also helps to look at the indicators your organisation uses to monitor the state of these work processes.

Choose an incident relevant to your organisation. Study the results of the incident investigation with your team. Then ask questions together using the "O I C " approach:

  1. What do you observe and what insight does it give you in the context of your own organisation?
  2. What do you conclude from this insight, again in the context of your own organisation; and
  3. how would an indicator help you?

In addition, you continue to ask regular questions about your system of measures and the indicators used to control risks.
