On industrial sites and within chemical clusters, much transportation takes place. The transportation sector is greening, which means that in the future more and more use will be made of alternative powered trucks (AAVs). These are trucks that use natural gas (LNG or CNG) or hydrogen as fuel, or are electrically powered.

Because this must not come at the expense of safety, Safety Delta Nederland, on behalf of the petrochemical industry and the safety regions, asked the Netherlands Institute for Public Safety (NIPV) to investigate the specific safety risks associated with the presence of alternatively powered trucks on petrochemical industrial sites.

The results of this study are now available in the NIPV Report - Safety of Alternative Powered Vehicles at Chemical Sites - Incident Scenarios (Phase 2)..

This report describes credible incident scenarios that could occur there with AAVs that are expected to have significant impact on safety at and around these petrochemical operating sites. The report further describes possible measures to manage the risks.

The developed scenarios and proposed measures are a prelude to the field test yet to be conducted.
