In the Safety Delta Netherlands, industry, government and science work together to further improve safety at companies in the Netherlands that work with hazardous substances: finding, connecting and innovating in safety!

It is quite challenging to find the right balance between developing knowledge about safety that we can apply immediately now and knowledge that we might need in the future. The field of security issues is very broad. We have limited resources and fragmentation is a real danger. It is all about implementing knowledge. New knowledge must not ultimately be put on the shelf.

Some 20 frontrunner companies contribute financially, among other things, to the development of knowledge by SDN. Recently, they gave their opinion on areas in which innovations in security are desirable. They did this by choosing what they considered to be the most important top 5 from a long list of research questions.

The top 5 leaders in "safe questions":

  • What knowledge and skills do we expect from the leader, the engineer and the operator in the factory of the future?
  • What are the new safety risks for companies working with hazardous substances as a result of the energy transition and how are we going to manage them?
  • How can data mining be used to predict weaknesses in security risk management at an early stage and thus further improve security?
  • What innovations in licensing, public oversight and enforcement would help further improve (process) safety in industry?
  • What are the security risks within or between companies as a result of digital interconnectedness (cyber security) and how are we going to manage them?

In all these subjects, safety culture within a company or sector plays an important role. That is also the reason why there is a lot of interest in determining the most important elements that characterise a good safety culture. In addition, there is a particular need for an easy-to-apply method to measure these characteristics.

More information on the elaboration of these top 5 questions can be found on the innovation page and the projects page of Safety Delta Netherlands.

I hope you find it interesting.

Kind regards,

Arjan
