WCM: Best Practice for Risk-Based CUI Management

[Source: WCM, https://www.wcmvector.com/kennisproduct/best-practices-en-tools-voor-risk-based-cui-management ]

Summary

This best practice addresses the control of corrosion under insulation (COI) / Corrosion Under Isolation (CUI) using a risk-based approach based on asset management principles. It focuses on in-service insulated piping and process equipment made of C-steel and stainless steel, whether coated or uncoated or with a preservative coating such as Thermally Sprayed Aluminum (TSA), whether classified as a pressure container or not.

The influence of design choices, quality control programs and operating conditions is reflected in the risk present, to be controlled. This risk can be different for each company. From the best practices it can be deduced what are optimal management choices for a company. The best practice is not a design instruction.

The best practice is supported with tools for communication, application and evaluation. These are in four appendices, which can also be used to roll out a management approach for corrosion under insulation:

  1. Tool BP CUI Management prioritization - a tool to manage risk-based CUI
  2. Tool BP CUI Management - a tool to retrace and evaluate the approach taken
  3. Lifecycle costing CUI Management - a tool to provide decision support based on life cycle analysis costs
  4. Tool suitability of NDT techniques.
