The digitalization of the chemical process industry leads to not only vast work automation with less human engagement but also massive data and data-driven techniques. New risks and challenges need to be addressed when adopting digital solutions.

On September 16th and 17th, 2021 a virtual symposium on Process Safety and Asset Integrity Management in the Digital Age was successfully held. It was organized by the Safety and Security Science Group of Delft University of Technology. The Co-sponsors included Safety Delta Netherlands, Nazarbayev University and Tsinghua University.

This Virtual Symposium with more than 300 attendees registered from Europe, Asia and the US brought together researchers and practitioners to share knowledge and to identify and establish new collaborative research opportunities relevant to process safety and asset integrity management in the digital age. It provided a platform for international scholars in the process industry to share the latest academic insights and communicate with each other on the future of process safety and asset integrity management in the digital age.

The two-day event with 9 keynotes and 4 rountables focused on the opportunities and challenges in safety, security, and integrity management in the digital age. Starting the symposium, Prof. Pieter van Gelder and Dr. Ming Yang from TU Delft expressed their warmest welcome to all the experts and audiences. Then, Mr. Arjan van Dijk from Safety Delta Netherlands was invited to give an opening remark and a keynote on digitalization in HSE management.

Other speakers were:
• Prof. Rajagopalan Srinivasan from Indian Institute of Technology Madras. He spoke about data-driven approaches for process safety management.
• Prof. Valerio Cozzani from University of Bologna. He did a keynote on digital security in the process industry.
• Prof. Hans Pasman from Texas A&M University gave a speech on resilience in the process industry.
• Prof. Faisal Khan from Texas A&M University gave a speech on risk assessment and management of digital systems in the process industry.
• Prof. Genserik Reniers from TU Delft who did a keynote on safety culture in the digital age.
